Do these long distance companies still use high quality
equipment?

Certainly. Your long distance calls will travel over the same
fiber optic lines that you would use as a customer of AT&T, Qwest, Sprint,
or MCI.

Which service do you recommend?

We don't have one all-encompassing recommendation because the
services are each suited to different needs. We sign up for the best options in
several services to get a package that gives us the most value.

MCI says that companies with rates as low as 4.5¢ and lower
are probably charging those rates per "talk unit" rather than
"per minute". They say that talk units are usually 20 or 30 seconds,
making the real rate per minute two or three times what I thought it was.

That sounds like something MCI would say. Nevertheless, we don't
play those shenanigans. If we say the rate is 4.5¢ per minute, then it's 4.5¢
per minute.
